OUR STORY

INSPIRING CHANGE | INSPIRING WHĀNAU

Āwhina Whānau Services was established in 1984 as a Māori values based organisation, mandated by Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi.
Our service holds a unique position within the iwi that provides counselling and educational programmes to tamariki (children), rangatahi (adolescents), tangata (individuals) and whānau (families).
Āwhina Whānau Services is fully committed to the prevention, protection and safety of children, young people, and whānau. We believe that family involvement and participation is essential for the well-being and protection of children.
We offer a free counselling service that is welcoming, caring and confidential.

“It’s not always easy for people seeking help to state their needs or put words to their thoughts and feelings, particularly when these are tangled amid feelings of confusion, fear, humiliation, anger and despair. Then it can be hard for people to remember their strengths and abilities; the courage and determination that have enabled them to get this far.”

- Monica Stockdale, Āwhina Whānau Services Manager, 2016
